MALIK TV MOUNTING
TV Recommended Height & Viewing Distance
Everything you need to know to mount your TV at the perfect height and distance for a comfortable, professional viewing experience.
What Height Should My TV Be On the Wall?
You're going to be clocking many hours with your eyes glued to your TV, so the height at which you mount it might be the most important decision you make. The best position for most people is eye level — not looking up.
Think about it: No one sits in the front rows of a movie theater because looking up at the screen strains the neck and eyes. But it's also wise to determine what "seated" means in the particular room your TV is in.
For example, if you're going to be watching the game sitting on bar stools or while playing darts or pool, you'll want to mount the TV higher than if you're lounging on the couch binging your latest obsession.
A good general height, according to Samsung, is 42 inches from the floor — roughly eye level for someone who is 5 feet 6 inches tall.
How to Find Your Perfect Height
Sit in Your Normal Viewing Position
Take a seat as you normally would on your preferred chair, stool, or couch. Think about how you'll actually be watching — relaxed, upright, or reclined.
Measure from Floor to Eye Level
Have a friend or family member measure from the floor up to your eye level. Keep in mind other viewers too — a couple of inches difference isn't a huge deal.
This Is Your TV's Center Point
This height is where the center of your TV should be — not the top or bottom edge. The center is the midpoint of your screen.
Test With Painter's Tape
Take a piece of painter's tape and stick it to the wall at your center point. Have a seat and stare for a few minutes. If it feels comfortable, you're good to go!
⚠️ Mounting above furniture? If your ideal eye-level height is 40 inches and your cabinet stands 20 inches, subtract the cabinet height from your eye-level height (20 inches). Then divide your TV height (e.g. 32 inches ÷ 2 = 16 inches). Since 16 is less than 20, you have enough clearance — you're good to go!
Recommended TV Height by Room Type
Use this as a quick guide based on your seating and room setup:
| Room / Seating Type | Recommended Center Height | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Living Room (Couch) | 42 – 48 inches | Standard eye level for seated adults |
| Bedroom (Bed) | 48 – 54 inches | Slightly higher for watching while reclined |
| Bar / Kitchen (Bar Stools) | 54 – 65 inches | Higher seating = higher TV position |
| Basement / Media Room | 40 – 48 inches | Dedicated viewing — keep at eye level |
| Above Fireplace | 60 – 72 inches | Use full-motion mount to tilt down |
| Office / Standing Desk | 52 – 60 inches | Mix of sitting and standing viewing |
What About Viewing Distance?
Some of your TV size decision will come down to how big your room is and whether it provides enough space to sit a comfortable distance from the screen — which also impacts how you arrange your furniture.
A general rule of thumb: measure the distance from your seat to your TV in inches and multiply by 0.84.
If you sit 78 inches from your TV:
78 × 0.84 = 65.5 inches — meaning a 65" TV is ideal for that distance.
This formula gives you the best screen-size range for comfortable, immersive viewing without straining your eyes.
How to Calculate the Best TV Viewing Distance
The right viewing distance depends on TV size, room type, resolution, and how you use the TV — movies, gaming, or sports all have slightly different sweet spots.
| TV Size | Minimum Distance | Ideal Distance | Maximum Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32" | 3.5 ft (42") | 4 – 5 ft | 6 ft |
| 43" | 4 ft (48") | 5.5 – 6.5 ft | 8 ft |
| 55" | 5 ft (60") | 7 – 8.5 ft | 10 ft |
| 65" | 6 ft (72") | 8 – 10 ft | 12 ft |
| 75" | 7 ft (84") | 9.5 – 11.5 ft | 14 ft |
| 85" | 8 ft (96") | 10.5 – 13 ft | 16 ft |
🎮 Room type matters: Media rooms dedicated to movies, sports, or gaming benefit from a shorter viewing distance for a more immersive experience. Formal living rooms or TVs mounted above a fireplace may require a greater viewing distance to reduce neck strain and suit room aesthetics.
